Phone Usage Alert

A Phone Usage alert fires when phone use is detected while a vehicle is being driven. Distraction is a leading cause of crashes, so catching it early lets you coach drivers before it becomes a habit.

How to set it up

  1. Go to Alerts > Rules and click Create rule.
  2. From the Driver tab, pick the Phone Usage template (an EVENT rule) — or choose Start from scratch.
  3. Adjust the condition if needed.
  4. Choose which vehicles or groups the rule applies to.
  5. Set a schedule — Always, Business Hours, Outside Business Hours, or Custom.
  6. Pick the notification channels (In-App, Push, Email, SMS), then Save.

What you can set

  • Condition — phone use detected while driving.
  • Behaviour — as an EVENT, use the dedup window (and per-trip aggregation) so a single trip doesn’t flood you with repeats.
  • Assignments — all vehicles, or specific vehicles and groups.
  • Notifications — channels and recipients.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a camera?

Yes. Detecting phone use needs a driver-facing camera / MDVR, or a device that reports phone-usage events. Without hardware that can see or report the behaviour, there’s nothing for the rule to act on.

Will I get an alert for every second of use?

No — the EVENT behaviour’s dedup window and per-trip aggregation group repeated detections, so one trip produces a sensible summary rather than a stream of alerts.
